Fertilizer caused massive fish kill in Ionia

The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy says manure fertilizer was the cause of thousands of fish dying in Ionia.

EGLE communications manager Hugh McDiarmid Jr. says they learned of a fish kill in Bellamy Creek on Monday.

Officials say the fertilizer was applied to a field within 10 feet of a waterway and was then washed into the stream when it rained.

EGLE says they are investigating the circumstances of the fish kill while the Michigan Department of Natural Resources is planning to investigate the extent.
