Thousands without power, roads covered with ice across region

GRAND RAPIDS (WOOD-AM) - Around 195,000 Consumers Energy customers across the state are currently without electricity.

Utility spokesperson Brian Wheeler says 300 crews that have been pre-staged across the state will get to work once its safe.

"It is safe to say there will be people who have power out into the weekend, into Saturday and maybe longer," Wheeler said." We certainly encourage people to check out the outage map and make sure you have a plan to stay safe."

Several roads are in poor condition. Allegan County Road Commission Managing Director Craig Atwood says roads in his county will get treated with a salt and sand mixture this morning.

Schools throughout Michigan are closed. We have a full closure and delay list here.
