Kalamazoo to put $1 million in federal funds toward affordable housing

KALAMAZOO (WOOD-AM) - City commissioners in Kalamazoo voted last night to put $1 million in American Rescue Plan funds toward a future affordable housing project.

The money will go to Kalamazoo Neighborhood Housing Services, which plans to buy and rehabilitate a series of structures, including several on the city's north side.

Matt Milcarek, the KNHS director of construction services, said future residents will be low-income single families who make 80 percent or less of the area's median income.

Another $1.4 million associated with the project will come from "lending dollars, a variety of small grants, and KNHS capital,” Milcarek told WOOD-TV.
