Kalamazoo to pay $180k after building demolished during standoff

The city of Kalamazoo is agreeing to compensate the owner and tenant of a home that police tore down during a standoff in November.

The city will pay $33,178.65 to tenant Andrea Young.

The city will also pay $117,000 to Gary Apps, who owns the property and between $20,000 to $30,000 to clean up the site.

The building was demolished when shooting suspect Alex Rawls refused to come out of the home for hours.

Rawls shot at officers which led to the decision to begin tearing down walls to get eyes on the suspect.
