MSP release 5-point plan in response to report on race and traffic stops

Michigan State Police Director Col. Joe Gasper is releasing a five point plan in response to an independent study commissioned to look at race and traffic stops.

Gasper says the plan includes fitting all troopers with body cameras, cultural awareness training, a listening tour with African American leaders across the state, creating a dashboard for troopers to learn about their traffic stop data and hiring an independent firm to review their policies and recommend changes to combat the disparities in traffic stops.

The report does not reflect any commentary on individual troopers.

Gasper says the study found evidence of racial and ethnic disparities in traffic stops, and Michiganders deserve unbiased policing and accountability from the force.
