Spectrum Health treating more patients than ever

Spectrum Health officials say the hospital system is treating more inpatients than ever, including a record number of children with COVID-19.

Chief Medical Officer Dr. Joshua Kooistra says the hospitals in Grand Rapids have reached an all-time high census today with 1,100 patients across Blodgett, Butterworth and Helen DeVos Children's Hospital.

Kooistra says COVID has a large part in the hospitalizations, however other illnesses are also contributing.

The health system says 85 percent of the hospitalized patients are not vaccinated.
