Boyfriend charged with GR murder on his birthday

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A Grand Rapids man accused of shooting and killing his girlfriend over the weekend is now charged with murder.

Mikeya Shenice Day, 35, died Sunday night after police say her boyfriend shot her while the two were in a vehicle on Hancock Street near Eastern Avenue.

Neighbors called 911 after they say Day, who was covered in blood, knocked on their door seeking help. She left in a car and a short time later, she and her boyfriend showed up at a local hospital, where Day later died.

Her boyfriend, 31-year-old Jamar Terrelle Purdle, appeared in court on his birthday Tuesday, and was formally charged with a crime that could send him to prison for the rest of his life. Purdle was arraigned on four counts including open murder, being a felon in possession of a firearm, carrying a concealed weapon and a felony firearm charge.

While presenting a warrant to a Grand Rapids judge Tuesday morning, a detective said the investigation, which includes the analysis of physical evidence, proves that Purdle intentionally shot and killed Day.

Purdle is being prosecuted as a habitual offender, which could mean a longer prison sentence if he's convicted. Grand Rapids police say this is his fourth offense.

Purdle was discharged from Michigan Department of Corrections' supervision in February after being sentenced to 1.5 to 7.5 years in prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm in August 2016.

Purdle also served time for larceny from a person. He was sentenced to between 1.5 and 10 years for that 2006 crime.
