Stryker plans $109.8M expansion in Portage

PORTAGE, Mich. (WOOD) — One of West Michigan’s largest companies is expanding in Portage, bringing hundreds of new jobs to the area with an average salary of $73,000.

Stryker plans to invest $109.8 million to expand its facility at 3800 E. Center Ave. by 253,000 square feet, according to a tax exemption request filed with the city.

The plan is expected to create 260 jobs by the end of 2025; 150 of those jobs would come in the first two years of the project, the company says.

Stryker already employs 3,612 people in Michigan.

The Michigan Economic Development Corporation Tuesday approved a $2.6 million performance-based grant for the project, which includes an employee café and patio, more training space and offices designed to inspire collaboration. Stryker would also expand employee parking from 390 spaces to 1,300 spots.

The Portage City Council will consider an additional tax break for the project during its meeting Tuesday at 7 p.m.

If all goes as planned, construction on the expansion would start this fall and wrap up by the end of 2020.
