Ex-WMU athlete convicted in deadly shooting

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — A former Western Michigan University basketball player has been acquitted of murder in the deadly shooting of a WMU student; however, he will likely still go to prison.

A jury Thursday found Joeviair Kennedy guilty of armed robbery and one count of felony firearm in the December 2016 shooting of 19-year-old Jacob Jones.

Kennedy was acquitted of felony murder and a second count of felony firearm in connection to the shooting, which happened at SoHo Apartments on S. Howard Street, west of campus.

Police believed Jones was selling a small amount of marijuana at the time of the shooting.
