GR commission taking applications to fill seat

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The Grand Rapids City Commission says it will take applications to fill the seat vacated by 3rd Ward Commissioner David Allen.

Tuesday marked Allen's last day on the commission. He's leaving to focus on his job as the head of the Kent County Land Bank.

Commissioners now have to appoint someone to take Allen's place until his seat goes back up for election next year.

The application process hasn't been worked out yet, but Mayor Rosalynn Bliss said at the commission's Tuesday evening meeting that details should be available within a few weeks after the commission coordinates with the city's human resources department.

Former Commissioner James White withdrew his name for consideration after a plan that Bliss and 3rd Ward Commissioner Senita Lenear had floated to install him in Allen's seat.

Bliss praised Allen for his "dedication and sacrifice." Allen said he regretted the need to step down and that he would miss working with his colleagues.
