GRPD: 2 in custody after stealing, crashing van

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (via WOOD TV 8) — Two people are in custody after police in Grand Rapids said the pair stole a van before crashing it into a tree on the city's west side.

GRPD said its officers noticed a suspicious blue Chevy van exiting the rear of a local business on Front Avenue SW around 8:30 a.m. Sunday.

As police approached, the van fled at a high speed.

Officers did not pursue the van. Authorities say the vehicle lost control just two miles away and went off the road, where it crashed into a tree near the intersection of Tamarack Avenue and Walker Avenue.
