High winds hit W. MI; thousands without power

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Thousands of homes and businesses across West Michigan are in the dark, as strong winds batter the area.

A total of 22,165 Consumers Energy customers were without power as of 10:40 a.m. Friday. Kent County was the hardest hit area, with 14,947 outages, according to the company’s outage map.

The following West Michigan counties had significant outages as of Friday morning:

  • Allegan County: 1,448 outages
  • Barry County: 97 outages
  • Kent County: 14,947 outages
  • Montcalm County: 106 outages
  • Ottawa County: 2,842 outages
  • St. Joseph County: 119 outages
  • Van Buren County: 538 outages

Much of West Michigan is under high wind warnings or advisories. The National Weather Service says damaging wind gusts could reach 60 mph in some areas, leading to widespread outages, downed trees and power lines.

It’s unclear when power will be restored.
