MI Supreme Court denies appeal of Jamarion Lawhorn

LANSING, Mich. (WOOD) — The State Supreme Court has denied the appeal of Kent County’s youngest convicted killer.

Jamarion Lawhorn was found guilty of first-degree murder in September of 2015 when he was 12 years old.

Lawhorn’s lawyers previously appealed the conviction to the Michigan Court of Appeals, arguing the evidence clearly showed he was guilty but mentally ill when he stabbed 9-year-old Connor Verkeke to death on a Kentwood playground in August 2014.

After the stabbing, he told police that he was looking for someone to kill, and the child who asked him if he wanted to play just happened to be the most convenient victim.

Lawhorn received a blended sentence that included time at Muskegon River Youth Home with a possibility of prison if he misbehaved.
