Grand Rapids residents thrown by early road work

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Construction on a neighborhood street in Grand Rapids caused headaches and trapped some people inside their homes Monday as they found their driveways torn to bits.

Gravel driveways were put in Monday evening for many residents on Lafayette Avenue NE north of I-196. But earlier in the day, many had no way in our out of their drives, which caused all sorts of problems for their schedules.

The worst part, residents say, is that they didn't know major construction on the road was going to start Monday.

"I had to walk home and all of a sudden I just see a giant machine just breaking open the road and just like there was about two or three feet where our driveway was and it was no longer anymore," Noah Cooperider, who lives off Lafayette, said.

He and his roommates John Tremonti and Ashleigh Lowis say they never got any notice from the city of Grand Rapids about the construction. Tremonti said he couldn't go to work as a result.
