Woman sentenced for fatal drunken driving crash

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A woman who was driving drunk when she struck two pedestrians in Grand Rapids, killing one of them, is headed to a state prison.

Kristina Ryl was sentenced Monday to between two and 15 years in prison for operating while intoxicated causing death and between two and five years for operating while intoxicated causing injury. Those sentences will run concurrently.

The crash happened Aug. 23, 2017, along the curve where Twin Lake Drive turns in to Michigan Street NE. Authorities say Ryl lost control on that curve and hit 75-year-old Joy Gillette and her 77-year-old husband. Joy Gillette was killed; her husband was seriously injured but survived.

At the time of the crash, the couple was walking their two dogs, one of which was also killed.

Ryl was charged the following month.
