Garbage truck driver injured in crash near Rockford

COURTLAND TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A garbage truck driver was airlifted to the hospital after a crash near Rockford.

It happened around 11 a.m. Monday on Myers Lake Avenue NE between 13 Mile and 14 Mile roads in Courtland Township, east of Rockford.

Kent County sheriff’s deputies told 24 Hour News 8 that a garbage truck driver was stopped in the road, working on the back of the truck when he was struck by a vehicle. The garbage truck driver was pinned between his truck and the vehicle. He was airlifted to the hospital with a major leg injury, deputies said.

The driver of the vehicle, a 85-year-old man, told deputies he was going to pass the garbage truck but an oncoming vehicle prevented him from doing so and he was unable to stop.

As of 12:30 p.m. Monday, dispatchers said the roadway was still closed. Authorities are asking drivers to avoid the area.

The crash remains under investigation. It’s unclear at this time if the driver of the car will be ticketed or if charges will be sought.
