GRPD say one person has been killed and one injured in a double shooting

Grand Rapids police say one person has been killed and another hurt in a double shooting on the city’s southwest side.

Police have taken three men into custody for fighting at the scene.

It happened at 4:27 p.m. Friday in the 1400 block of Grandville Avenue SW near Cordelia St., says Sgt. Terry Dixon.

Police are currently searching for a suspect, but have not released a description.

The suspect approached on foot firing several shots injuring both victims before fleeing the scene on foot, police say.

Neighbors in the area say they heard at least six shots before a red four-door sedan was seen speeding away on Van Raalte Drive.

A 23-year-old man was pronounced dead on the scene. The identity of the victim is being withheld pending notification of the next of kin. A 26-year-old victim was taken to an area hospital with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the leg, Dixon said.

Both directions of Grandville Avenue are closed between Clyde Park Avenue and Hall Street. Authorities are asking for the public to avoid the area while police investigate.

Meanwhile, police with body armor and long-guns were throughout the neighborhood seemingly concentrating on nearby houses for several hours. Authorities left the scene around 10 p.m. after conducting at least one search warrant and towed a red Grand Prix.

Anyone with information on suspect’s whereabouts is asked to call the Grand Rapids Police Department at 616.456.3400 or Silent Observer at 616.774.2345.
