The Red Cross opened an emergency shelter at the Kentwood Community Center at two Monday morning.

That's because of the heavy storms,  and maybe even a tornado, that smashed the cities of Wyoming and Kentwood overnight.

The heaviest wind damage broke open Kenowa Lumber, along 54th Street at Clay .and ripped open part of a strip mall north of 44th street in Kentwood.

WOOD TV talked with "Dale" who was inside Kenowa Lumber.  He said he and other workers sheltered undere low tables as the ceiling beams collapsed around them when one wall blew out.  No one was badly hurt in any of the areas where the strong winds hurt or destroyed property.

WOOD TV says winds may have been 90 miles per hour.  The National Weather Service has not confirmed it was a tornado, but the Storm Team Eight's Kyle Underwood told Gary Alan on West Michigan's Morning News that he is convinced it was.  He says damage was all of that twisty kind that indicates tightly circling winds.
