The state is investigating Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero for alleged violations of state campaign finance laws.

The Lansing State Journal reports that three complaints filed earlier this month, accuse Bernero of giving "uncharacteristically high" salary payments June 14 to two campaign aides: Elizabeth Hart and Christopher Breznau. Three days later, Breznau and Hart donated money to at-large incumbent Kathie DunbarÂ’s campaign for Lansing City Council.

State law prohibits a person from making a contribution to someone else under the agreement that the money be given to a particular candidateÂ’s committee.

The investigation by the Secretary of StateÂ’s office is not expected to impact the Lansing city elections as an outcome isn't expected for several weeks.  Bernero is seeking a third term in office in the November 5 election.

Bernero called the allegations against him and his staff "11th-hour negative campaign tactics."

Bernero ran for Governor in 2010.
