Obama calls for Ferguson probe

The community in Ferguson, Mo., has a responsibility to have an open investigation into the death of Michael Brown, the president said Thursday.

Protests in the city have turned violent. President Obama said in an address to the nation Thursday he spoke with Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon to express his concern over the "violent turn of events" that have taken place in recent days.

Peaceful protests turned violent Wednesday when police turned out in riot gear to dispel demonstrators assembled in the streets near the scene of the shooting.

"When something like this happens, the local authorities, including the police, have a responsibility to be open and transparent about how they are investigating that death, and how they are protecting the people in their communities," the president said in his address.

While the narrative is fluid, 18-year-old Michael Brown was shot fatally by a Ferguson police officer last weekend. Brown was unarmed.
