No Civil Liability in Deputy-Involved Killing

A jury has cleared a Grand Traverse County sheriff's deputy of civil liability in the 2007 shooting death of a man that ended an 11-hour standoff.

The Traverse City Record-Eagle reports  jurors deliberated less than two hours Thursday before returning the decision in the lawsuit filed by the estate of Craig Carlson. Trial began earlier this month in U.S. District Court in Kalamazoo.

Attorney Grant Parsons represented Carlson's estate and says the finding was ``no cause of action.'' The estate sought punitive damages of more than $3 million

Deputy Charles Jetter was part of a team whose members responded to Carlson's house on a report that the Interlochen man was armed and acting irrationally. Authorities say Jetter fatally shot Carlson after it appeared Carlson pointed a rifle at officers.
