There's a new state government website that's been created to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the National Anthem.

Phil Porter, chair of the commission and director of Mackinac State Historic Parks, says volunteers are needed to help commemorate the anthem.

Porter is encouraging local communities, civic organizations historical societies, veteran organizations, legislators, schools, colleges and other groups to host a public event marking the 200th anniversary of the anthem.

On September 14, 1814, Francis Scott Key drafted the lyrics for the title "in Defence of Fort McHenry," which quickly became "The Star-Spangled Banner."

The site was created by the Michigan Council for History Education.   Information on the site comes from the War of 1812 Bicentennial Commission.
