Prison time for the 20-year-old man who pleaded no contest to assault charges following a February shooting at Ferris State University has been sentenced.

DeCory Downing was sentenced to 47 months to 6 years in prison for two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon and two counts of felony firearms. Downing was originally facing 17 felony charges, but many were dropped as a part of the plea deal.

Police say Downing, who is not a Ferris State student, shot a student at an off-campus apartment complex on Feb. 1.
