Feeding America West Michigan Food Bank Needs Volunteers

The big "Feeding America West Michigan Food Bank" in Comstock Park has a unique problem.

More people need help getting fed, but there also is more surplus food available from farmers.  The problem is a lack of volunteers to get that food packaged.

Andrew Steiner tells WOOD Radio, "Last week we volunteers going through these huge bins of carrots....to inspect and sort our bulk produce."

He says the demand for food assitance has increased but the farmers who donate part of their crops also were more generous this year, with perhaps a 10% increase in bulk produce having come to the warehouse.

He said more than 316,000 people are "food insecure" in West Michigan and the Upper Peninsula. He expects to exceed last year's nearly 24 million pounds of distributed food.
