Regional utility company Consumers Energy was named Thursday as an "environmental champion" in an independent survey.

A survey from Cogent Reports ranked the company as the second-most trusted electrical and natural gas provider in the region and the third overall in the country.

With a wind farm expected to come on by the end of the year -- and seven coal-fired power plants expected to be retired by 2017 -- the company said the award confirms its commitment to a low-carbon economy.

"This environmental ranking as best in the Midwest tells us that our customers recognize our work, which is an ongoing process," Consumers Energy's Patti Poppe said.

Consumers says it expects to get 10 percent of its electricity from renewable energy resources by the end of the year.
