A judge has called off Tuesday's recall election of Benton Harbor Mayor James Hightower.
Berrien County Trial Court Judge John Dewane's ruling Thursday came after county Clerk Sharon Tyler called for a postponement in the wake of two people being charged with crimes related to gathering signatures.
Recall petitions filed earlier this year against Hightower have come into question.
In a statement, Tyler says she's relieved that the sanctity of the election process in Berrien County will be protected.
Hightower's term expires at the end of next year. He says the recall has been a big distraction for him and the city.
Still, Hightower says he will focus on moving Benton Harbor forward.
