A 22-year-old Grand Haven man caught a record-breaking fish while competing in the Bowfishing Association of Michigan's tournament in Muskegon.

Joshua Teunis was taking part in the tournament on June 15 when he caught a black buffalo that weighed 41.25 pounds and measured 38.25 inches. The catch helped his team to win the tournament title and a $250 prize. The next day a Department of Natural Resources fisheries biologist verified the catch.

The previously state-record for a black buffalo was held by Bryan Degoede of Kalamazoo, who caught a 37.06-pound, 39.25-inch fish on the Kalamazoo River on Sept. 5, 2012.
